PORT KAITUMA, Region One โ€” Police on Friday discovered a quantity of cannabis and cocaine aboard a vessel during an intelligence-led operation at the Port Kaituma waterfront, adding to a recent string of major drug seizures across the country.

According to police, the operation, led by a gazetted officer, resulted in the discovery of 22.2 pounds of suspected cannabis and 1.25 pounds of suspected cocaine concealed within the vessel. Five men who were aboard were arrested and taken into custody as investigations continue.

The suspected narcotics were weighed, sealed, and lodged at the Port Kaituma Police Station in the presence of the suspects.

This latest seizure comes amid a widening national crackdown on narcotics trafficking and production. It follows several recent operations in which police and CANU ranks destroyed large cannabis farms and intercepted traffickers in multiple regions.

Earlier this week, police in Upper Berbice River eradicated marijuana farms valued at over $250 million, while similar raids in Regions Seven and Eight led to the destruction of hundreds of plants and several makeshift camps.

The operation also comes on the heels of the arrest of former Alliance For Change (AFC) Member of Parliament, Devin Sears, who was recently intercepted while driving a minibus allegedly transporting a quantity of marijuana

The Guyana Police Force says these efforts are part of an intensified national campaign to dismantle networks involved in the cultivation, trafficking, and distribution of illegal drugs across Guyanaโ€™s riverine and hinterland regions.

Investigations into the Port Kaituma seizure remain ongoing.
