GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Authorities say U.S.-sanctioned Member of Parliament Azruddin Mohamed undermined police authority on Christmas Day by instructing a female driver to disregard lawful orders from uniformed officers and leave the scene of a traffic stop, even as the vehicle was being investigated for multiple traffic violations on the East Bank Demerara.
Police reported that at about 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 25, Inspector Moolchand Jadunandan and a team of officers were conducting traffic enforcement on Eccles Public Road when they stopped a Toyota Land Cruiser, registration number PAB 3000, which was being driven by an identifiable woman.
The driver was asked to produce her driver’s licence and the required vehicle documents. While officers were awaiting those documents, police said Mohamed arrived at the scene in a black vehicle, approached the Land Cruiser and instructed the driver to drive home rather than proceed to the police station.
According to police, the driver complied and drove the vehicle to Lot 789 Republic Park, East Bank Demerara, where it was parked. Inspector Jadunandan and the officers followed and attempted to clamp the vehicle.
Police said a man who identified himself as Maksim Dmitriyev of Lot 275 Barrow Street, Eccles, East Bank Demerara, then produced documents showing that he is the registered owner of the vehicle. He was informed of the alleged offenses and was invited to the Providence Police Station.
At the station, the female driver was processed for prohibition of tinted glass, among other traffic-related offenses, police said.
Authorities said the driver will be notified by summons to answer charges including failure to comply with the lawful directions of a police officer in uniform and failure to produce a driver’s licence and other required documents.
The vehicle was subsequently detained and lodged to facilitate verification of its engine and chassis numbers by a Licensing and Certifying Officer at the.
Police said the ‘registered owner’ was placed on his own recognizance and is required to report on Monday, Dec. 29, at 9 a.m. pending the outcome of the examinations.
