Azzrudin’s Recording of Public Officials Homes is Reckless Endangerment Disguised as Politics

February 9, 2026

Dear Editor,

The recent actions of the OFAC-sanctioned Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed,, who has been circulating videos and images of ministers’ private residences on social media, represent a reckless and dangerous escalation in Guyana’s political discourse.

This behaviour is not accountability, it is not transparency, it is certainly not legitimate opposition politics- it is recklessness—made worse by the fact that it is being carried out by the Leader of the Opposition. Publicly displaying the homes of ministers places their families, children, neighbours, and household staff at risk. In any serious democracy, deliberately revealing the private dwellings of public officials would be condemned outright. Exposing where people live is not political work; it is the creation of danger.

If Mr. Mohamed genuinely believes that ministers have unlawfully acquired assets, the lawful and decent course of action is clear and well established: request the declarations submitted by ministers to the Integrity Commission and move a motion in the National Assembly for their examination. That is the constitutional mechanism for scrutiny and accountability. Social-media vigilantism is not a substitute for parliamentary oversight.

It is also deeply misleading to suggest—by implication or innuendo—that the existence of a home is evidence of corruption. Ministers, like thousands of ordinary Guyanese, acquire property through mortgages, bank loans, inheritance, and lawful earnings. Homes are not proof of wrongdoing.

But the hypocrisy of this campaign cannot be ignored. This sudden concern for integrity comes from an individual who has yet to account for serious allegations of tax fraud, illicit enrichment, and properties allegedly acquired through defrauding the state of revenues—conduct that resulted in international sanctions. A sanctioned individual accused of financial misconduct cannot credibly present himself as the nation’s moral authority.

Accountability is not selective.Transparency is not performative. And public safety must never be collateral damage for political theatre. The office of Leader of the Opposition carries responsibility, restraint, and respect for the rule of law. Exposing private homes crosses a dangerous line, undermines democratic norms, and places lives at risk. Every Guyanese—regardless of political affiliation—should be alarmed by its normalisation.

Sincerely,

Mohamed Ibrahim
