GEORGETOWN, Guyana  — The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) has seized close to 20 kilograms of cocaine in two separate operations carried out this week in Georgetown and along the Essequibo Coast.

According to CANU, the first interception occurred on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, when ranks acting on intelligence conducted an operation at a residence in Home Place, South Ruimveldt Park, Georgetown.

A search of the property uncovered several parcels containing a whitish powdery substance suspected to be cocaine. Five suspects were arrested and taken to CANU Headquarters, where the substance tested positive for cocaine, weighing 5.970 kilograms. Investigations into this bust are ongoing.

A second operation was conducted the following day, Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Lot 13 Adventure Village, Essequibo Coast. CANU officers again acted on information received and searched the premises, where they found several parcels of a substance suspected to be cocaine.

The occupant, identified as Kennard Smith, a businessman of the said address, was taken into custody and escorted to CANU Headquarters along with the narcotic, which tested positive for cocaine and weighed 13.790 kilograms.
