CDC leads response to potential oil spill threat as barge carrying 8,000 barrels of waste oil tilts

October 20, 2026

Guyanese authorities have activated an emergency response operation after a barge carrying approximately 8,000 barrels of waste oil was found listing significantly at a private wharf along the East Bank of Demerara, raising concerns about a potential environmental disaster.

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) said Tuesday that several government agencies have been mobilised to stabilise the vessel and prevent a possible oil spill.

The coordinated response involves the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard.

According to the CDC, the barge was observed tilting significantly while berthed at the private facility, prompting authorities to immediately assess the risks and implement precautionary measures.

The commission stressed that no oil spill has been confirmed, although containment equipment and emergency response resources have already been positioned to facilitate swift intervention if the situation deteriorates.

Efforts are now focused on safely stabilising the vessel and minimising the possibility of waste oil entering the surrounding waterways.

The CDC said protecting nearby communities, public safety and the environment remains a priority as the multi-agency response continues.

Despite the potential danger posed by the vessel’s cargo, authorities reported that the situation remains stable and is being continuously monitored.

The commission assured residents that all necessary precautions are being taken and reaffirmed its commitment to working with partner agencies to prevent environmental damage.

The CDC did not identify the owner of the barge or the private wharf where it is berthed. It also did not disclose what caused the vessel to list or how long stabilisation efforts are expected to take.
