CH&PA CEO Inspects Ongoing Works on GPL Access Road Project

November 6, 2025

GEORGETOWN, GuyanaWorks are advancing on the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Access Road Project, a major infrastructure undertaking designed to improve community access to electricity across East Coast and East Bank Demerara, Region Four.

On Wednesday, Chief Executive Officer of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), Dr. Martin Pertab, led a site inspection of the project alongside Director of Community Development Gladwin Charles, engineers Anthony Ragnauth, Raefer Clifton, Shenelle Reid, and other technical officers.

During the visit, Dr. Pertab emphasised that timely completion of the access road is vital to supporting electricity distribution for new and existing housing schemes.

“It’s important that we complete this project so that electricity can be readily available to provide power to existing and new communities,” the CEO stated.

The access road, which links South Ruimveldt to the GPL substation at Columbia, Mahaica, has been divided into 12 lots, each covering approximately four kilometres of carriageway. The total investment for the full project is estimated at $5.58 billion.

Dr. Pertab’s team inspected Lot 6, which extends from Enterprise to Victoria, to evaluate progress and address challenges encountered by contractors. Among these are interactions with farmers along the project’s alignment.

The CH&PA will coordinate with the Ministry of Agriculture and other relevant agencies to resolve land and access concerns efficiently, ensuring steady progress on the project.

In addition to the road inspection, Dr. Pertab also visited the Enmore Industrial Site on the East Coast of Demerara to assess ongoing works there.

The GPL Access Road Project forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure and housing expansion agenda, aimed at strengthening electricity delivery and improving living standards across Region Four.
