ERC summons Jennifer Ally again over alleged racist social media posts

October 22, 2025

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has summoned Jennifer Ally to answer allegations that she made racially charged comments on social media — the latest in a series of incidents that the body says threaten Guyana’s fragile social harmony.

In a statement Tuesday, the Commission said it was “deeply concerned” about Ally’s recent remarks, describing them as “divisive, offensive, and contrary to the spirit of respect and harmony” it promotes across Guyana’s multiethnic society. The ERC noted that Ally had been previously cautioned for similar conduct.

Ally came under national scrutiny earlier this year after posting disparaging comments about the late Adriana Younge and her family, which the ERC at the time described as “reprehensible and deeply offensive.” The incident prompted a formal investigation and led to a video apology from Ally in which she said: “To whomever my Facebook comments and posts have offended, I apologise. The intent was never there… at the end of the day, we should take responsibility for the things we say, and this is me taking mine.”

However, sections of the ERC later expressed concern that the apology appeared “feigned” and lacked genuine remorse, according to local reports.

The Commission said Ally has been ordered to appear before it at 11 a.m. on October 23 to respond to the allegations. It warned that failure to comply could result in further action under the country’s laws.

While acknowledging that freedom of expression is protected under Article 146(3) of the Constitution, the ERC reminded citizens that the right “does not relate to hate speeches or other expressions… capable of exciting hostility or ill-will against any person or class of persons.”

The ERC urged Guyanese to use social media responsibly, avoid rhetoric that could inflame ethnic tensions, and instead promote tolerance and unity.

“The Commission remains committed to fostering a society where mutual respect and understanding form the foundation of national harmony,” the statement said.
