A father and his toddler were killed while the child’s mother remains in critical condition following a road accident on Friday at Orangestein Public Road, East Bank Essequibo.
Preliminary reports indicate that a truck belonging to Tropical Orchard Products Company Limited (TOPCO), a subsidiary of Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), was attempting to make a U-turn along the public road when the incident occurred.
According to information reaching NewsHub, the family was travelling on a motorcycle ridden by the father when they approached the area at a fast rate. Eyewitnesses say the traffic in the opposite lane had stopped to allow the truck to complete the turn.
However, the motorcycle reportedly overtook the line of stationary vehicles and collided with the turning truck.
The father and the toddler died at the scene, while the child’s mother sustained severe injuries and was rushed to hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
The driver of the truck is currently in police custody as investigators continue their probe into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
In a statement, TOPCO confirmed that one of its trucks was involved in the accident.
“We are deeply saddened to learn that the incident has resulted in the tragic loss of life, including that of a father and a child. We also understand that the mother is in critical condition,” the company said.
“On behalf of the management and staff of TOPCO, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this devastating tragedy.”
The company added that it is cooperating fully with the Guyana Police Force and other relevant authorities as investigations continue.
“Out of respect for the grieving family and the integrity of the ongoing investigation, we will refrain from further comment until more information becomes available,” the statement noted.
