Five men have been arrested following the alleged robbery of a Chinese national who was reportedly held at gunpoint after his vehicle was blocked along a Georgetown roadway on Saturday afternoon.
Police in Regional Division 4 ‘A’ said the incident occurred around 15:03 hrs on March 14, 2026, on Chappel Street between Durban and Hadfield Streets in Lodge, Georgetown.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was driving a minibus along Chappel Street when his path was blocked by a black Toyota Auris motor car. Two motorcycles then approached and the victim was allegedly held at gunpoint and relieved of a bag before the suspects fled the scene.
With the aid of the Smart City surveillance cameras, police tracked the movements of the suspects and the vehicles believed to have been used in the robbery. Investigators later observed the motorcycles in James Street, Albouystown, where the suspects reportedly joined the black Toyota Auris motor car, which then proceeded into Bel Air, Georgetown.
Police ranks subsequently intercepted the vehicle in Eping Avenue, Bel Air. During the operation, one suspect, a 22-year-old man of ‘E’ Field, Sophia, allegedly pulled a firearm from his waist and pointed it at a police rank. The officer discharged a round, injuring the suspect to his left thigh.
The injured suspect was escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was treated and admitted as a patient under police guard. His condition has been listed as stable.
Four other suspects — an 18-year-old of Cooper Street, Albouystown; a 19-year-old of Durban and Smyth Streets; a 26-year-old mason of Mango Lane, East Ruimveldt; and a 19-year-old of Middle Road, La Penitence — were arrested and taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station where they remain in custody.
Police also recovered a Glock 17 pistol along with three 9mm rounds of ammunition. The Toyota Auris motor car and the two motorcycles allegedly used in the robbery were seized and lodged as part of the investigation.
Efforts are being made to contact the victim as investigations continue.
