Gov’t Signs Mineral Agreement With Mako Mining for Eagle Mountain Gold Project

September 10, 2026

The Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Natural Resources, has signed a mineral agreement with Mako Mining Corp. and its wholly owned subsidiary, Stronghold Guyana Inc., for the Eagle Mountain Gold Project.

The agreement was also signed by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission. It establishes the legal, fiscal and operating framework for the project.

Mako Mining has maintained a presence in Guyana for more than 10 years and has developed a longstanding relationship with the country and its mining sector. The government said the agreement marks an important step toward advancing development of the Eagle Mountain gold resource and reflects its commitment to facilitating responsible investment in the mining industry.

The company has begun preparatory activities and is expected to start construction by the third quarter of 2027. Gold production is currently projected to begin by the end of 2028, subject to the completion of required regulatory and environmental approvals.

The government said the project is expected to create opportunities for employment, training and skills development, as well as increase the participation of qualified Guyanese workers, contractors, suppliers and service providers.

The agreement includes commitments related to environmental stewardship, community development and social programs, consistent with the government’s objective of ensuring that mineral development contributes to Guyana’s sustainable economic growth.

The Ministry of Natural Resources, the GGMC and other relevant agencies will continue working with Mako Mining to support the responsible advancement of the Eagle Mountain project while ensuring compliance with Guyana’s laws and protecting the country’s environmental, social and economic interests.
