The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) has signed a US$15.6 million contract with InterEnergy Group for Supervisory, Engineering, and Project Management Consultancy Services, marking another major step in Guyana’s energy transformation drive.
The two-year agreement aims to accelerate the modernisation of the country’s electricity infrastructure, strengthen grid reliability, and support the transition toward a fully integrated smart grid system.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Hon. Deodat Indar, said the contract represents a well-negotiated partnership designed to deliver tangible improvements to Guyana’s power sector.
“It was a very rigorous negotiation process. The contract reflects the best interests of both the Government of Guyana and InterEnergy Holdings. I look forward to seeing this partnership deliver meaningful results that will transform the sector and enhance service delivery,” Minister Indar stated.
GPL Chairman, Mr. Maurice Gajadhar, described the partnership as a “significant milestone” in strengthening regional cooperation and advancing national development.
“This collaboration reflects the willingness of two friendly nations to work together for mutual progress. As Guyanese, we are proud to be among the fastest-growing economies in the world, and this partnership shows that we are matching words with action,” he said.
Meanwhile, InterEnergy Group’s Chairman, Mr. Rolando González Bunster, reaffirmed his company’s commitment to Guyana’s development, noting that the agreement goes beyond the financial value of the contract.
“This partnership represents a meaningful connection and a symbol of our commitment to supporting Guyana’s energy advancement. Electricity is vital, and we assure you that our work will make you proud,” he said.
GPL’s Head of Executive Management, Mr. Kesh Nandlall, said the initiative is a key step toward transforming the nation’s electricity landscape.
“This collaboration is about strengthening capacity, improving reliability, and ensuring our grid is equipped to meet the growing demand as we move toward our 2030 smart grid goal,” Mr. Nandlall stated.
The partnership follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2024 between GPL and InterEnergy Holdings, setting the stage for technical cooperation, project oversight, and capacity building within the utility.

Through this collaboration, InterEnergy will help manage and supervise major infrastructure projects, advise on operations and maintenance of generation assets, and lead the integration of smart technologies into GPL’s grid system.
The agreement is expected to play a critical role in enhancing Guyana’s energy resilience, reducing system losses, and preparing the power sector for the country’s rapidly expanding industrial and residential demand.
