Guyana adds more than 1,300 newly trained teachers to workforce

November 8, 2025

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Guyana has added 1,345 newly trained teachers to its national education system, marking a major milestone in the government’s ongoing effort to achieve a fully qualified teaching workforce across the country.

The graduates, trained through the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), completed two years of professional development in areas including early childhood, primary and secondary education, special education, and teacher education. This year’s cohort is the largest in the institution’s history and brings the total number of CPCE-trained teachers since 2020 to more than 6,000.

Education Minister Sonia Parag said the graduation demonstrates the administration’s commitment to quality education and equitable access to teacher training in all 10 administrative regions. “The strides being made to have 100 percent trained teachers in Guyana are remarkable, and every region is playing its part,” she said during the ceremony.

The government has expanded CPCE’s operations to satellite centres nationwide and introduced hybrid learning options, allowing trainees in remote communities to complete studies without relocating to Georgetown.

Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain, who administered the Teacher’s Oath, called on the new educators to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and service. CPCE’s Advisor on Tertiary Reform, Kofi Dalrymple, urged graduates to pursue continuous learning “because Guyana demands it.”

Minister Parag also announced that all graduates will benefit from salary adjustments effective October 1, 2025, and confirmed that 1,456 new trainees have already registered for the next academic cycle — a sign of growing interest in the profession.

With the addition of this cohort, officials say Guyana is moving steadily toward its goal of achieving a 100 percent trained and certified teaching workforce, a key pillar in improving education delivery and supporting the country’s human capital development agenda.
