Guyana Invites Proposals for New Municipal Airports in Berbice and Lethem

February 17, 2026

The Government of Guyana has issued Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for the design, construction and financing of two new municipal airports — one in Rose Hall, Canje, Region Six, and the other in Lethem, Region Nine — as part of its ongoing push to modernise aviation infrastructure and strengthen regional connectivity.

According to notices issued by the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation, the projects will be executed under an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Finance (EPC+F) model.

The first project involves the development of a Code 3C Municipal Airport at Rose Hall, Canje, in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). Code 3C classification typically accommodates medium-sized aircraft used for regional commercial operations.

The proposed airport is expected to improve connectivity within Berbice and support economic activity in agriculture, oil and gas support services, tourism and cross-border trade.

The second RFP seeks proposals for a Code 4E Municipal Airport at Lethem in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo). A Code 4E airport is designed to accommodate larger, long-haul aircraft, significantly expanding operational capacity.

Lethem, located near the Brazil-Guyana border and connected via the Takutu River Bridge, has become a key hub for trade and cross-border commerce. The proposed airport is expected to enhance Guyana’s integration with northern Brazil and support tourism and investment in the Rupununi.

For both projects, pre-proposal conferences and the submission and opening of bids will be coordinated through the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board.

Pre-proposal conferences will be facilitated through the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation, located at 55 Main Street, Georgetown. Interested parties may contact the ministry via telephone at 231-2504/5 or by email at procurement@mpua.gov.gy.

The government has increasingly prioritised aviation infrastructure to improve domestic connectivity, support hinterland development and position Guyana as a regional transport hub amid rapid economic expansion.

No timeline for contract award was immediately disclosed.
