GEORGETOWN, Guyana — The Government of Guyana has launched a new digital learning platform designed to equip public servants with the skills needed to navigate an increasingly technology-driven workplace.
The initiative, known as the Public Service Upskilling Platform, was officially unveiled on Monday at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre by the Ministry of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation. It provides access to over 100 online courses in partnership with the global learning provider Coursera.
The courses—offered free of charge to public servants nationwide—cover areas such as data analysis, digital transformation, project management, leadership, communication, and administrative efficiency. Participants will be able to complete the self-paced programmes at their convenience, with certification available upon completion.
President Irfaan Ali, who delivered the feature address, said the initiative forms part of his administration’s broader strategy to modernise the public service and foster a more responsive, efficient, and digitally capable workforce.
“We must move past rigidity and embrace innovation and technology,” President Ali said, noting that digital transformation is central to delivering better services to citizens and positioning Guyana as a competitive modern state.
Minister of Public Service Zulfikar Ally described the launch as a milestone in the development of the workforce. He stated that the platform demonstrates the government’s commitment to creating opportunities for continuous learning and enhancing productivity across ministries and agencies.
Coursera’s Vice President, Zac Rule, joined the launch virtually and commended Guyana for its forward-looking investment in human capital. He said the collaboration aligns with global trends of governments leveraging technology to enhance efficiency and build digitally fluent institutions.
The platform’s rollout is part of Guyana’s broader digital transformation agenda, which includes expanding broadband access, enhancing e-governance services, and promoting a knowledge-based economy. Officials stated that the initiative supports the administration’s 2025–2030 development goals and complements training efforts in other sectors.
Observers note that while accessibility is key, the platform’s long-term success will depend on how effectively new skills are integrated into daily operations and reflected in improved service delivery to citizens.
