GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Guyana’s President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Tuesday expressed solidarity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India following a deadly explosion near the Red Fort Metro Station in New Delhi that claimed at least eight lives and left several others injured.
On his official social media handle, President Ali wrote:
“On behalf of the Government and people of Guyana, I express solidarity with the Government and people of India following the horrific blast in New Delhi. We stand with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and all those affected by this incident.”
The explosion occurred Monday evening when a car stopped at a red light near the Red Fort area and detonated, igniting nearby vehicles and causing widespread panic in one of the capital’s busiest corridors, authorities said. At least eight people were confirmed dead and about 19 others were hospitalized with burn injuries, according to Indian police.
India’s National Investigation Agency has taken over the probe, while officials said the blast is being treated as a possible act of terrorism. Prime Minister Modi condemned what he described as a “cowardly act,” vowing that “the conspirators behind this will not be spared.”
The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and symbol of Indian independence, was quickly cordoned off as bomb-disposal teams swept the area. Early reports indicated that the car involved was a Hyundai i20, though authorities have not yet determined the source of the explosives.
The incident has drawn global condemnation and sympathy. The U.S. State Department said it was “closely monitoring the situation” and offered condolences to the victims’ families. Canada, Japan, France, and the European Union also issued statements of support and solidarity with India.
President Ali’s message reinforced Guyana’s longstanding friendship with India — rooted in cultural ties, shared democratic values, and mutual development cooperation — and emphasized his government’s support for the Indian people during this time of national grief.
