GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred Thursday on the Rupert Craig Highway, East Coast Demerara, in the vicinity of Pump Road, which claimed the life of 45-year-old Jomo Peters of Haslington New Scheme, East Coast Demerara.
The accident involved motorcar PYY 4296, driven by a 21-year-old woman; motorcar PAE 9879, driven by a 28-year-old woman; and motorcycle CR 2701, which was being operated by Peters.
According to police reports, Peters was proceeding east along the Rupert Craig Highway at an allegedly fast rate and without wearing a safety helmet. While overtaking a line of traffic during the “third lane” period, the left handlebar of his motorcycle reportedly collided with the front left side and rearview mirror of motorcar PYY 4296, which was traveling west. The impact caused Peters to lose control and subsequently crash into the front left side of motorcar PAE 9879, which was also heading west.
As a result of the collision, Peters was flung onto the median, sustaining multiple injuries to his head and body. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) responded to the scene and pronounced him dead.
His body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said breathalyzer tests conducted on both drivers showed no trace of alcohol. The drivers remain in custody assisting with the investigation.
