Mustapha meets West Coast fisherfolk as Gov’t announces renewed cash grant support

November 8, 2025

WINDSOR FOREST, Guyana — Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha on Friday met with fisherfolk from Windsor Forest and surrounding West Coast Demerara communities to discuss key developments in the fisheries sector and reaffirm the government’s support for their livelihoods.

The meeting followed President Irfaan Ali’s recent announcement that fisherfolk nationwide will again receive a cash grant as part of ongoing efforts to cushion rising costs and boost the fishing industry.

Minister Mustapha assured those gathered that the process will be conducted with strict accountability and transparency to ensure that only legitimate fisherfolk benefit. He explained that representatives from each landing site will sit on verification committees to help compile and vet lists of eligible recipients.

“This collaborative approach will make sure the process is fair, transparent, and efficient,” Mustapha said.

The Minister also addressed concerns about the Ministry of Public Works’ current programme to clear roadside stalls, assuring affected fisherfolk that the Ministry of Agriculture—through the Fisheries Department—will help identify suitable, developed areas for their safe relocation.

Highlighting recent advancements, Mustapha noted that more than 200 landing sites have been developed or upgraded across the country in recent years, underscoring the government’s continued investment in the sector.

He further reaffirmed that the Government of Guyana remains in active dialogue with Suriname on the long-standing issue of fishing licences for Guyanese fisherfolk operating in the Corentyne area, expressing optimism that a sustainable resolution will be achieved soon.
