MAHAICONY, Guyana — Police in Regional Division Five seized more than 30 kilograms of cannabis during a late-night patrol at Harmony Hall, Mahaicony, on Tuesday, leading to the arrest of two Berbice residents.

According to police, the discovery was made around 9:18 p.m. along the Harmony Hall Public Road after ranks noticed a motorcar parked on the northern side of the roadway and decided to investigate. Officers approached the vehicle and made contact with the two occupants — a 26-year-old gold miner from Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, and a 30-year-old nursing assistant from Rosignol, West Bank Berbice.

A search of the vehicle and its occupants uncovered three black garbage bags in the trunk. Inside, officers found seven transparent compressed parcels containing leaves, seeds and stems of cannabis.

The parcels were taken to the Mahaicony Police Station, where the cannabis was weighed in the presence of both occupants, amounting to 30.625 kilograms, police said.

The man and woman were arrested and remain in custody as investigators continue to probe the origin of the drugs and whether others may be involved.

The cannabis has been lodged as evidence. Police have not yet laid charges, but the investigation is ongoing.
