OPR probes misconduct claims at Police Academy; file sent to DPP for advice

October 13, 2025

The Guyana Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has completed an investigation into allegations of inappropriate conduct involving officers at the Police Force Academy’s Georgetown campus and has sent the file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The incidents were recently brought to the attention of the Commissioner of Police, who ordered an immediate probe, the force said. Several academy staff members and recruits were interviewed and provided statements to OPR investigators.

As the probe progressed, one officer and three sergeants were transferred from the academy pending the outcome of the matter.

Police misconduct and internal discipline have been recurring issues within the force, and the OPR is the body tasked with handling complaints against serving ranks. The referral to the DPP signals that criminal or disciplinary charges may be considered once legal guidance is received.

The Police Force did not disclose details of the alleged misconduct.
