GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Ranks of the Guyana Police Force on Wednesday conducted a major anti-narcotics operation that led to the destruction of four large cannabis farms and a makeshift camp in the Upper Berbice River.
The joint eradication exercise, carried out between 4:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Kuyarakuru Creek and Sabina Point, involved ranks from the Narcotics Branch and Regional Division #6 and was led by gazetted officers, police said.
During the operation, law enforcement officers discovered four cannabis farms spanning approximately 16 acres. The fields contained an estimated 95,000 cannabis plants ranging from two to seven feet in height.
Police also found a 30-by-20-foot makeshift camp at the location. Inside, ranks uncovered about 90 pounds of dried cannabis.
According to investigators, the cannabis plants, dried cannabis, and camp were destroyed by fire at the site.
Police estimate the total street value of the narcotics at GYD$70,968,116 (about US$340,000). Of that amount, the cannabis plants were valued at GYD$32,186,000, while the dried cannabis was valued at GYD$38,782,116.
No arrests were reported. Investigations are continuing.
