Police transfer two CJIA narcotics officers amid bribery probe; further investigation ordered

October 13, 2025

An inspector and a junior rank of the Guyana Police Force’s Narcotics Branch assigned to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) have been transferred to the Tactical Services Unit pending the outcome of a bribery investigation, authorities confirmed.

The transfer follows allegations that the two officers received money from a female passenger on September 27, 2025, in exchange for allowing her to travel with frozen food. Transporting frozen goods on international flights is subject to strict regulations, and airport law enforcement officers are responsible for ensuring compliance.

The complaint was investigated by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), which prepared a case file and submitted it to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The DPP has since provided legal advice, directing investigators to conduct further inquiries.

Police said the investigation remains active and no charges have yet been filed.

The case comes amid heightened scrutiny of law enforcement activities at CJIA. In recent months, authorities have announced new anti-corruption measures at the airport, including increased supervision of officers and the planned rollout of body-worn cameras for ranks stationed at ports of entry.

The Guyana Police Force has repeatedly warned both officers and members of the public that bribery and facilitation payments are criminal offenses.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
