Policewoman charged for death of schoolboy in Success accident

November 4, 2025

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — A 35-year-old police corporal was charged Tuesday with causing death by dangerous driving in connection with a crash that killed a 15-year-old pedestrian on the Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

Yonelle Cumberbatch, of Eastville Housing Scheme, Annandale, appeared before Senior Magistrate Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where the charge—contrary to Section 35(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02—was read to her. She was not required to plead and was granted $500,000 bail.

The charge stems from an Oct. 30 collision about 7:30 a.m. involving a motor car, PAB 214, allegedly driven by Cumberbatch, and pedestrian Navindra Mahes, 15, of Le Ressouvenir. Mahes was pronounced dead following the incident, authorities said.

As a condition of bail, Cumberbatch must lodge her passport with the court and report to police on the first Monday of every month. The case was adjourned to Jan. 6, 2026.
