President Dr Irfaan Ali on Sunday night delivered a sweeping call for deeper unity, civic responsibility and environmental stewardship, declaring that the future of the Republic depends on citizens transforming national pride into daily action.
Speaking at the 56th Republic Day flag-raising ceremony at the Parliament Building, the Head of State said patriotism must move beyond ceremonial observances and become a lived commitment reflected in how Guyanese treat each other and their environment.
As the Golden Arrowhead was hoisted against the Georgetown skyline, President Ali urged citizens to see the moment not merely as a commemoration of the nation’s journey since becoming a republic in 1970, but as a renewed pledge to shape its future.

“Our flag must not only remind us of where we have come from,” the President said. “It must challenge us to define where we are going — together.”
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces underscored that national pride belongs to every Guyanese and must be expressed through unity, discipline and shared purpose. He stressed that true patriotism is measured not in speeches, but in conduct — in respect for law, community and country.
Linking national development with environmental responsibility, President Ali called on citizens to take ownership of safeguarding Guyana’s vast natural resources. Protecting the country’s forests, waterways and public spaces, he said, is an essential expression of love for the homeland.

He challenged communities to work collectively toward presenting “the cleanest, safest and most beautiful Guyana,” adding that environmental care is inseparable from national identity and global leadership.
The 56th anniversary celebration brought together government officials, members of the disciplined services and citizens in a show of unity and reflection, marking another milestone in Guyana’s republican journey.
President Ali reaffirmed that the strength of the Republic lies not only in its institutions, but in the everyday choices of its people — choices that, when guided by pride and purpose, will continue to elevate Guyana on the regional and international stage.
