President Dr. Irfaan Ali has extended condolences to the leadership and people of the United Arab Emirates and the Al Maktoum family following the passing of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the younger brother of Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Sheikh Ahmed died Monday at the age of 76. Dubai has declared 10 days of official mourning, during which flags will be flown at half-staff across the emirate.
In a message to Sheikh Mohammed, who is also vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, President Ali conveyed the sympathy of the Government and people of Guyana.
“On behalf of the Government and people of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, and on my own behalf, I extend my deepest condolences to Your Highness and the Al Maktoum family on the passing of your beloved brother, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum,” President Ali said.
“At this time of profound sorrow, our thoughts and prayers are with Your Highness and the bereaved family. May Allah grant Sheikh Ahmed eternal peace and grant Your Highness and your family strength and solace.”
Sheikh Ahmed was a prominent member of Dubai’s ruling family and served for decades in public service, business and sport. He served as deputy chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security and held senior roles in the emirate’s business and sporting sectors.
He was also closely associated with Al Wasl Sports Club and the development of horse racing in Dubai, including the Jebel Ali Racecourse.
Sheikh Ahmed was the youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, former ruler of Dubai, and the youngest brother of Sheikh Mohammed. A graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he also served in Dubai’s military establishment earlier in his career.
President Ali concluded his message by extending his “deepest sympathy and highest consideration” to Sheikh Mohammed and the Al Maktoum family.
Guyana and the United Arab Emirates have strengthened bilateral relations in recent years, with cooperation spanning investment, energy, climate action, sustainable development and other areas of mutual interest.
