President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Sunday summoned the contractor China Road & Bridge Corporation (CRBC), consultant Sheladia Associates Inc., engineers, and the traffic management team overseeing the rehabilitation and expansion of the East Bank Public Road, warning that the current pace of work and poor traffic management are unacceptable.
The President “read the riot act” to the contractor and consultant for delays and for failing to enforce proper traffic arrangements. He also reprimanded the Guyana Police Force for allowing frequent breaches of traffic laws, particularly by heavy-duty trucks, which he said compromise road safety.
Following the meeting, CRBC and Sheladia were instructed to submit a revised work plan within 24 hours.
Several new measures were agreed to, including:
- Establishment of an integrated control room
- Deployment of a traffic management drone system
- Creation of an early warning system
- Development of an emergency transport plan with the Guyana Coast Guard and the Marine Section of the Police Force to assist travelers heading to Cheddi Jagan International Airport during unforeseen disruptions
These interventions aim to improve efficiency, enhance safety, and ensure smoother traffic flow as the major infrastructure project continues.
