GEORGETOWN, Guyana — The Guyana Police Force has stepped up traffic enforcement along the East Bank Public Road following President Irfaan Ali’s sharp criticism of contractors and engineers over slow progress and poor traffic management on the major infrastructure project.
During a high-level meeting Sunday, Ali reprimanded the contractor, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC); consultant Sheladia Associates Inc.; engineers; and the traffic management team, accusing them of slothfulness and failing to implement proper safety and traffic controls during the rehabilitation and expansion of the roadway. He said the ongoing congestion and disorder were unacceptable and warned that accountability would be enforced.
As a follow-up, Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken on Monday visited the project site with Regional Division 4B Commander, Traffic Officer Michael Ramdass and the commissioner’s personal assistant, ASP Kevindra Lall, to implement new measures aimed at improving traffic flow and public safety.
Hicken ordered an increased presence of traffic ranks along the corridor and directed officers to take firm action against drivers — particularly truck operators — who disregard traffic rules and create hazards.
“These instructions will be enforced,” Hicken said, emphasizing that maintaining order on the road is critical as construction continues.
The government and the Police Force said the new enforcement measures are intended to support the East Bank Public Road project while protecting commuters on one of the country’s busiest transportation routes.
