Guyana’s President named among world’s most influential Muslim leaders

October 30, 2025

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — President Irfaan Ali of Guyana has been named among the world’s most influential Muslim leaders in the 2026 edition of The Muslim 500: The World’s 500 Most Influential Muslims, a global publication that highlights individuals shaping Muslim societies and international affairs. His inclusion, as a notable political leader from the Caribbean, underscores Guyana’s growing international influence and the president’s rising global profile, the publisher of the Muslim 500, Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Amman, announced.

The publication noted President Ali as Guyana’s first Muslim head of state and commended his stewardship of one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, driven by rapid oil development and broad-based national transformation. It highlights his focus on inclusive growth, national unity, and interfaith harmony in one of South America’s most religiously diverse societies. The editors further recognise Ali’s role in strengthening Guyana’s diplomatic presence and advancing global discussions on food security, climate leadership and sustainable development.

The Muslim 500 evaluates individuals based on their ability to exert meaningful influence — culturally, financially, politically, or ideologically — on Muslim communities or global systems. Inclusion in this prestigious listing places Guyana among nations with prominent Muslim leadership figures, highlighting Dr Ali’s unique status as a Muslim head of state in Latin America and the Caribbean.

President Ali appears alongside some of the most prominent Muslim leaders in the world, including the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani; Pakistani jurist and Islamic finance authority Muhammad Taqi Usmani; and Yemen’s revered scholar, Habib Umar bin Hafiz. Also on the list are King Abdullah II of Jordan, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Dr Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, King Salman of Saudi Arabia, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, and Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The inclusion of such distinguished global personalities highlights the significance of Dr Ali’s presence on the list and reinforces Guyana’s increasing relevance in international forums.

This recognition underscores Guyana’s rapidly growing international profile, particularly in complex global debates encompassing climate change, energy, sustainable development, and South-South cooperation. President Ali’s inclusion reflects the belief that influence is not measured solely by population or geographic size but by the ability to champion progressive development, elevate national capacity, and engage meaningfully with the global community. For Guyana, the honour reinforces its emerging role on the world stage, while for Guyanese Muslims and the wider population, it represents a national milestone — placing the country among historic centres of Muslim leadership and modern hubs of Islamic thought and governance.
