KINGSTON, Jamaica — Guyana on Thursday officially handed over a shipment of relief supplies to Jamaica as part of regional humanitarian support following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa. The handover took place at the Pimento Warehouse on Marcus Garvey Drive, Kingston, and marked a joint effort between the Government of Guyana, the Private Sector Commission (PSC), and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
The ceremony was attended by Jamaica’s Minister of Local Government, Desmond McKenzie; Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Sheila Sealey Monteith; Mr. Komal Singh of the Guyana Private Sector Commission; representatives of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM); and members of the Jamaica Defence Force.
Guyana’s delegation was led by Captain (Coast Guard) Vernon Burnett, who officially transferred the relief consignment to Jamaican authorities. The supplies—loaded earlier in the day at FARSAN and transported under military escort—were part of a coordinated regional response following President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s directive for Guyana to assist CARICOM partners affected by the hurricane.
Brief remarks during the handover highlighted the importance of regional solidarity. Minister McKenzie expressed gratitude to Guyana for its swift response, while Captain Burnett reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to supporting recovery efforts across the Caribbean.
The event concluded with the signing of the official handover certificate at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time .
