A 15-year-old Annandale Secondary School student died Thursday morning after he was struck by a vehicle driven by a woman, a police corporal, along the Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. and involved motor car PAB 214, the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement. The teen, identified as Navindra Mahes, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he later succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by medical staff.
Police officers were at the hospital supporting grieving relatives, officials said. The driver has been placed under close arrest as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and school community of young Navindra Mahes during this time of deep sorrow,” the statement read, adding that the matter is being handled with “the utmost seriousness, transparency, and in accordance with established procedures.”
No further details were immediately released. The investigation is ongoing.
