Smart City Cameras Help Police Crack West Ruimveldt Murder Case; Three in Custody

October 21, 2025

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has made a major breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of 24-year-old Faynel Brewster, thanks to footage from the Government’s Smart City Surveillance Cameras that helped track and identify the suspects involved.

Brewster was fatally shot around 11 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, 2025, in the yard of her West Ruimveldt home during what police believe was a botched robbery attempt. Reports indicate that her brother, a 31-year-old businessman, had just returned home on his motorcycle when two men on a black Honda XR rode up, confronted him, and attempted to rob him of his motorcycle and gold jewelry.

A scuffle ensued, during which one of the gunmen opened fire, striking Brewster twice—once to her upper arm and once to her chest. The suspects then fled north on their motorcycle without taking any valuables. She was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

CCTV footage from the Smart City network later revealed that the two men had been trailing Brewster’s brother from the Kitty Seawall area and were seen in the vicinity before and after the fatal shooting. Investigators used the footage to trace their route, leading to a targeted police operation at Morcourt Square, East La Penitence.

During that operation, two male suspects—aged 25 and 29, from Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, and Buxton, East Coast Demerara—along with a 25-year-old female vendor of Morocut Square were arrested. A search of the premises uncovered 50 live 9mm rounds and a black Honda XR motorcycle believed to have been used in the attack. The items were seized and lodged as evidence.

All three suspects remain in custody assisting with the investigation. Police say additional leads are being pursued as they move closer to bringing those responsible to justice.

The GPF said the case underscores the critical role of the Smart City Surveillance System in solving serious crimes and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining public safety through technology-driven policing.
