EAST BANK, Essequibo — Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal early-morning road accident in which a pedestrian died after being struck by a motor vehicle on the Orangestein Public Road, East Bank Essequibo.
The collision occurred at about 4:10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, 2025, and involved motor car PAB 2332, driven by a 25-year-old man of Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, and a male pedestrian whose identity has not yet been determined.
According to preliminary police investigations, the vehicle was proceeding east along the northern side of the roadway when the pedestrian, who was walking in the same direction, reportedly attempted to cross the road from north to south and entered the path of the approaching vehicle.
The driver reportedly attempted to avoid a collision by swerving, but the front left side of the car struck the pedestrian. The vehicle then veered off the roadway and ended up in the southern trench.
The pedestrian sustained multiple injuries and was transported in an unconscious state to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.
The body was later taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination is pending.
Police said a breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver, who remains in custody, and no trace of alcohol was detected. Investigations into the incident are continuing.
