Update: Venezuelan, Two Others in Custody for Gas Station Explosion

October 27, 2025

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has detained three individuals, including a male Venezuelan national, as investigators continue to probe Sunday’s deadly explosion at the Mobil Fuel Station at Regent and King Streets, Georgetown. The blast claimed the life of a child and left four others injured.

According to the GPF, significant progress has been made since the incident. Acting on intelligence and CCTV footage, investigators on Monday conducted a coordinated operation that led to the interception of a silver motor car, license plate PSS 7874, which was reportedly used to transport one of the suspects. The three occupants were subsequently taken into custody and are assisting with the investigation.

Information obtained from the arrests has provided key leads to detectives, who continue to pursue the principal suspect — believed to be of Spanish-speaking nationality — who remains at large. The police have issued a Wanted Bulletin for the individual and are appealing to the public for any information that could aid in locating him.

Investigators remain at the scene of the explosion, where extensive damage was recorded to the Mobil minimart, storage bond, and four fuel pumps. The blast also affected nearby commercial buildings, including a KFC outlet and sections of the High Court, consistent with the impact of the shockwave.

Experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory have collected and are analysing several samples — including plastic and metal fragments — to determine their origin and evidential value.

“The Guyana Police Force remains resolute and diligent in advancing this investigation. Every effort is being made to bring those responsible to justice and to safeguard the lives and property of all citizens,” the statement said.

The Police promised to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
