GEORGETOWN, Guyana — A 25-year-old Venezuelan gold miner has been charged with the murder of a fellow countryman in the Cuyuni River mining district, the Guyana Police Force reported Wednesday.
Police said Jose Manuel Garvajal of Quartzstone Backdam, Cuyuni River, was arrested on October 18 by a Detective Sergeant attached to the Bartica Police Station. He was formally charged on Wednesday with the murder of 35-year-old Yosber Alberto Rivero Sojo, also a Venezuelan national and gold miner.
Garvajal appeared before His Worship Teriq Mohammed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court around 3:35 p.m., where the indictable charge was read to him. He was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison pending trial.
The case has been adjourned to December 5, 2025. (Guyana Police Force)
