Woman Dies in Motorcycle Crash Involving Cow on Essequibo Coast

October 23, 2025

ESSEQUIBO COAST, Guyana — Police in Regional Division #2 are investigating a fatal accident that claimed the life of 34-year-old Yolanda John of Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast, on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on the Elisa Public Road and involved a motorcycle—registration number unknown—driven by 23-year-old Leroy Prince, also of Dartmouth, and a cow.

Police said Prince, who was riding with John, his girlfriend, reported that he picked her up from work and was heading north along the road when he saw a cow on the western side. He said he tried to swerve to avoid it but collided with the animal, causing him to lose control of the motorcycle.

John was thrown from the bike and sustained severe injuries. She was taken to the Lima Regional Hospital, where she died while receiving treatment.

A post-mortem examination conducted Thursday by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh found that John died from multiple injuries consistent with a motor vehicle accident.

Police said a breathalyzer test conducted on Prince showed no trace of alcohol. The motorcycle has been lodged at the Anna Regina Police Station for examination by the licensing and certifying officer, while Prince remains in custody assisting with the investigation.
