GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Construction is advancing on a new truck stop and parking facility at Grove, East Bank Demerara, an initiative aimed at reducing roadside parking, improving traffic safety and easing congestion along one of the country’s busiest corridors.
Chief Executive Officer of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), Dr. Martin Pertab, visited the site with a team of engineers as work continues within the designated industrial zone. The facility is being developed in response to the increase in heavy-duty vehicles on the road, fueled by Guyana’s rapidly expanding economy and construction sector.
Dr. Pertab said the location was deliberately chosen to ensure that residential communities are not affected by the movement or servicing of large trucks. “This is part of an industrial area, so any heavy-duty services or vehicles operating here will not impact nearby residents,” he said.

He added that the site will function as more than a parking space, with plans to establish a hub offering support, maintenance and other services for heavy-duty equipment.
During his discussions with contractors, Dr. Pertab underscored the importance of completing the project on schedule, stressing that timely delivery is essential as the country accelerates its infrastructure development. He noted that contractors’ performance on this and other projects will be considered in future contract awards.
The initiative is part of a wider national plan to establish similar trucking facilities across the country. During a recent Cabinet outreach in Region Six, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced that CH&PA will develop two 30-acre sites at Palmyra and Number 76 Village to accommodate trucks and heavy-duty machinery. The President said the investments will support safer roadways and smoother traffic flow.
