The Yarrowkabra Homestead Project was officially launched on Thursday, drawing a large turnout of prospective homeowners eager to view what officials described as a transformative housing and livelihood initiative.
The site was filled with applicants who toured the newly constructed homes, many describing the opportunity as life-changing. The project is designed to support socioeconomic empowerment and sustainable living, with each unit incorporating a fully integrated shade house aimed at strengthening food security, self-reliance and household income generation.
The opening ceremony was led by Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal; Minister within the Ministry of Housing, Vanessa Benn; and Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister, Kwame McKoy. Also in attendance were Chief Executive Officer of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), Dr. Martin Pertab; Chief Executive Officer of the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NARIE), Mr. Jagnarine Singh; Commissioner of the Guyana Forestry Commission, Mr. Edward Goberdhan; and other senior officials.
The Hyde Park Homestead Project is the brainchild of His Excellency President Dr. Irfaan Ali and is specifically designed to support women-led households. It is being implemented through a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Housing and the Ministry of Agriculture, reflecting the Government’s integrated approach to housing, livelihoods and sustainable development.

Each home is priced at GY$7 million and includes both land and a shade house. The compact yet functional units feature two bedrooms, one bathroom, a combined kitchen, dining and living area, and a verandah. The homes are built with reinforced concrete foundations, solid kerb walls and durable superstructures to ensure longevity and comfort. Each unit is also equipped with two 450-gallon water tanks and a 20-foot by 20-foot shade house.
At the launch, applicants drawn from the Ministry’s housing database were able to receive on-the-spot pre-qualification letters from commercial banks, significantly accelerating the homeownership process. Persons with pending housing applications were also facilitated, with opportunities provided to register for future allocations.
To date, 50 housing units have been completed, while an additional 25 are approximately 50 per cent complete. When fully developed, the first block of the Hyde Park (Yarrowkabra) site is expected to accommodate 112 housing units.

A key highlight of the event was the unveiling of a fully furnished model home, which offered visitors a practical demonstration of how the space can be efficiently and comfortably utilised. A live demonstration of the shade house was also conducted, showcasing its potential for household food production and small-scale income generation.
Several financial institutions, including the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI), Citizens Bank and Republic Bank, were present, while applicants were also free to engage other commercial banks. Insurance providers Assuria, Hand-in-Hand Mutual Insurance Company Ltd., and NAFICO were also on hand.

For many attendees, the launch represented more than a housing development—it marked a tangible step toward stability, empowerment and a more secure future for families across Guyana.
