Dredges, gold seized following crackdown on illegal operation in Puruni River

The Ministry of Natural Resources is reporting the seizure of two water dredges and a quantity of gold after dismantling another illegal mining operation along the Puruni River.

In a statement Saturday, the Ministry said that the exercise was conducted by the Enforcement Department of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) with support from the Guyana Police Force on September 17, 2026.

The team focused on mining activities within the river’s buffer zone, it stated.

“Three persons associated with the operations were escorted to Puruni Landing by the police where investigations are ongoing.The ministry wishes to remind all stakeholders of their obligation to comply with mining laws and regulations.”

Through the GGMC and in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, the Ministry of Natural Resources will continue enforcement activities to curb illegal mining and protect the country’s waterways.
