Allegations that police and immigration ranks received payments to facilitate the “movement of foreign nationals” along the Lethem Trail and in Lethem are being investigated by the Guyana Police Force.
Commissioner of Police Dr. Clifton Hicken has directed the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) to immediately investigate the allegations, which surfaced in a publication circulating on social media.
The GPF said the probe will seek to determine the circumstances surrounding the claims and establish their veracity.
Hicken said corruption and misconduct have no place in the Police Force and stressed that no rank will be shielded if evidence establishes wrongdoing.
Any member of the Force found to have acted unlawfully or breached established regulations will be dealt with in accordance with the law and established disciplinary procedures, the GPF said.
The Force is also urging anyone with information or evidence relevant to the allegations to provide it to the OPR to assist with the investigation.
The GPF said it remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, accountability and integrity among its ranks.
