Guyana, T&T agree on expanded trade, energy agenda during talks in Port of Spain

April 10, 2026

Guyana’s President Dr Irfaan Ali and Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar have agreed to advance a wide-ranging development, trade and economic agenda following bilateral talks held in Port of Spain.

The two leaders outlined priority areas for cooperation, including food security and investment opportunities, energy integration, technology exchange, human capital development and strengthened security.

They also agreed to establish a joint working group to address barriers to trade and improve competitiveness between the two countries. The mechanism will include private sector participation from both Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, with a focus on unlocking new opportunities and addressing shared development challenges.

Persad-Bissessar is expected to undertake an official visit to Guyana, where further agreements and initiatives are likely to be formalised.

Ali also expressed appreciation for Trinidad and Tobago’s continued support for Guyana’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, thanking the prime minister on behalf of the Guyanese people.

The talks also align with broader CARICOM priorities, including efforts to enhance regional food security and reduce reliance on extra-regional imports, as well as deepen economic integration across member states.
