Police are investigating a shooting involving ranks and a 27-year-old man along the Schoonord Highway, West Bank Demerara, after the man allegedly pointed what appeared to be a firearm at an officer responding to a report Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred between 1:45 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Aug. 19 and involved ranks attached to the La Parfaite Harmonie Police Station.
According to preliminary investigations, police received a report that a man was walking along the highway with what appeared to be a firearm tucked into his waist.
Ranks were dispatched to the area, and as one officer approached the man, he allegedly pulled the object from his waist and pointed it in the officer’s direction.
Police said the officer discharged one round during the confrontation. The man then reportedly dropped the object and fled, running into a nearby trench before making his way into a rice field.
Ranks pursued him and subsequently apprehended him.
After he was taken into custody, police observed what appeared to be a gunshot wound beneath his left armpit. He was transported to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he remains under medical care and police guard.
Investigators recovered the object the man allegedly pointed at the officer. Police said it appeared to be a black Glock-style air gun. It has been lodged as evidence.
Police have not indicated whether charges will be filed against the injured man.
Investigations are ongoing.
