— Ruling NDC secures 14 of 15 parliamentary seats in overwhelming mandate for second term
President Dr. Irfaan Ali has congratulated Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell on securing a second consecutive term in office following a landslide victory in Thursday’s general election, describing the outcome as a strong vote of confidence in his leadership.
Mitchell’s ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) captured 14 of the 15 seats in Grenada’s House of Representatives, according to preliminary election results, significantly expanding its parliamentary majority from the nine seats it secured in 2022. The party also received more than 60% of the popular vote.
In his congratulatory message, President Ali said the renewed mandate reflected the confidence of Grenadians in Mitchell’s leadership and the direction of his administration.
“His re-election represents a vote of confidence in his leadership and a mandate of continuity for the policies and vision his government has been pursuing for Grenada,” Ali said.
The November 5 election saw the NDC strengthen its dominance across the Caribbean nation, with the opposition New National Party (NNP), led by Emmalin Pierre, securing just one parliamentary seat, according to preliminary results.
Mitchell, who first became prime minister in June 2022 after ending the NNP administration led by former Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, now enters his second term with an expanded parliamentary majority.
His administration has identified economic modernisation, improved healthcare, employment opportunities for young people and national development among its priorities.
President Ali reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with Grenada, particularly through closer cooperation on regional development and integration within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
“I look forward, during his new term, to expanding our close collaboration and working together to advance regional integration,” the Guyanese leader said.
Both countries are members of CARICOM and share common interests in advancing regional economic cooperation, sustainable development and greater integration among Caribbean states.
Ali also extended best wishes to Mitchell and the people of Grenada as the country prepares for another five years under the NDC administration.
“On behalf of the government and people of Guyana, I extend best wishes for a successful new term and for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Grenada,” the president said.
The decisive electoral victory gives Mitchell a strengthened mandate to pursue his government’s development agenda while continuing to engage regional partners on shared Caribbean priorities.
